Mr. Carey and his background.I was born and raised in San Bernardino, California. San Bernardino is about 60 miles east of Los Angeles (just take the I-10 east and you'll see signs). I went to Ramona Alessandro Elementary School kindergarten to 4th grade, then switched schools to Marshall Elementary School for 5th grade. Marshall Elementary was a 5 minute bike ride from my house and reminds me a lot of Gravenstein Elementary School; a small neighborhood school with a great parent-teacher community.
Mr. Carey as a teacher.Three years before I retired from the Marine Corps, I decided that teaching would be my next career. I started volunteering in my oldest son's class in Stuttgart Elementary School in Germany. I shadowed a fourth grade class at Stuttgart Elementary during my last year in the Marine Corps. Once I retired, I immediately started substitute teaching at Gravenstein Elementary and entered my teaching credential program shortly thereafter. My first year of teaching was the 2018/2019 school year as a fourth grade teacher at Gravenstein Elementary!

Mr. Carey and the Marine Corps. One month after graduating high school from San Bernardino High School (Go Cardinals!), I enlisted in the Marine Corps for four years. I started off in the Marine Corps music program and went to to Armed Forces School of Music to learn how to be a Marine Corps musician and French Horn player. After a few years, I changed jobs into the intelligence community and spent the next 15 years traveling all over the world. In August 2017, I retired from the Marine Corps after 20 years.
Mr. Carey the TrekkerI have been an avid Star Trek fan since the 1980s. I started watching the Star Trek movies with my dad, then transitioned into Star Trek: The Next Generation. Why do I enjoy Star Trek? To quote Richard Lutz, "the enduring popularity of Star Trek is due to the underlying mythology which binds fans together by virtue of their shared love of stories involving exploration, discovery, adventure and friendship that promote an egalitarian and peace loving society where technology and diversity are valued rather than feared and citizens work together for the greater good. Thus Star Trek offers a hopeful vision of the future and a template for our lives and our society that we can aspire to".
